New ticket machines on buses for reading Accord Cards

Over the next few weeks, FIRST Aberdeen will be installing new electronic ticket machines on all routes in Aberdeen.

The majority of bus card holders will be unaffected by these new machines, however, Aberdeen City Council wants to ensure that in the unlikely event that a passenger’s card cannot be read, they know how to obtain a replacement card.

Passengers should place their national entitlement card on the smart card reader as directed by the driver.  If the card works, the driver will issue them with a ticket for travel as normal.

If a passenger’s card cannot be read by the ticket machine, passengers have the option of handing over their card in exchange for a free temporary seven day bus pass, which will be accepted on all bus services throughout Scotland. Alternatively, they can choose to keep the card and pay full fare for their travel.

Passengers with a faulty or old style card should contact the Accord Card office to request a replacement national entitlement card as soon as possible.

FIRST Aberdeen plan to trial the new electronic ticketing machines on the Park and Ride service from Monday, 27 October for two weeks. All going well the rest of the new ticket machines will be installed on the rest of the fleet.

For further information or to request a new national entitlement card passengers should call the Accord Card office on (01224) 346834.

Scotland Wide Free Bus Travel for Older and Disabled People

The Scottish Executive introduced a Scotland-wide free bus scheme in April 2006. This replaced any local concessionary travel schemes operated by local authorities, including Aberdeen City Council.

Anyone aged 60 and over, and eligible disabled people, are now entitled to Scotland Wide Free Bus Travel provided they have applied for, and received, the new National Entitlement Card.

In Aberdeen City, the National Entitlement Card and Accord card have been combined into one card. There is the Accord branding on one side, and the National Entitlement Card (and free bus travel logo) on the other side.

The Scotland-Wide Concessionary Travel Scheme for Young People started on 8 January 2007.  It will allow all 16 - 18 year olds and young full-time volunteers up to the age of 25 concessionary travel on buses, rail and ferries.  The Scheme provides a third off bus and rail travel.  If you live on a Scottish Island, you are entitled to two free return ferry journeys to the mainland each year.

You become eligible on your 16th birthday and fall outside the scheme on your 19th birthday.  Full-time volunteers (30+ hours a week) aged between 19 and 25 (up to your 26th birthday) who meet the criteria for Project Scotland are also eligible for concessionary travel scheme.  You must also be a resident of Scotland.
